DNCC Calls For More Action To Stimulate Growth

  • 160 retail regulations scrapped

  • Good start, but change must go further

Commenting on the announcement today by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills regarding the Red Tape Challenge and the removal of  regulations for retailers, George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is a step in the right direction and the scrapping of some of these specific regulations will have a positive effect on some firms in the retail sector.

“Reducing the amount of unnecessary red tape and administrative burdens placed on business is one of the Chamber’s main ongoing lobbying priorities, so it is encouraging to see the Government finally taking firm action to address this through its Red Tape Challenge.

“However, Ministers still need to do more to reduce the burden of regulation on business to support future economic growth. The Chamber would question how the small and incremental changes announced today will deliver significant real change whilst the Government continues to plough ahead with bigger regulatory changes such as extended share parental leave and flexible working.

“The Government has to understand that the more that it does to increase the cost of employing people and the more the administrative burden imposed on business by unnecessary employment legislation, the fewer jobs businesses will create.

“There is an inextricable link between the two. More red tape = fewer jobs.”
